The first youth-led non profit in Lake City, SC

who we are

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Hearth Project serves as a gathering place—like the hearth at the center of a home—where communities unite to spark change. Its mission is to empower rural communities by addressing environmental justice issues and advocating for sustainable solutions.

It aims to provide education and resources to underrepresented communities, particularly BIPOC and economically disadvantaged groups, to combat the impacts of climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation. Through community-driven initiatives, The Hearth Project promotes sustainable practices that foster resilience and create a healthier future for all.

Our story

In 2024, The Hearth Project was founded by Chandler Brandon, a high school student determined to address the detachment from environmentalism in daily life, particularly in rural, BIPOC, and economically disadvantaged communities. Growing up in Lake City, South Carolina, Chandler saw how environmental issues—pollution, climate change, and systemic neglect—were often viewed as distant concerns, unrelated to the struggles of her community. Yet, these are the very issues that threaten the well-being of Lake City and other rural areas, which will suffer the most from climate change and environmental degradation.

For too long, marginalized communities have been excluded from the climate conversation, and as a result, environmentalism has often been seen as something distant or disconnected from everyday life. But the reality is that environmental justice is a necessity, not a luxury. Chandler recognized the need to bridge this gap and bring environmentalism back into the daily lives of her community—especially in Lake City, where the rich agricultural legacy is being overshadowed by environmental neglect.

The Hearth Project is proud to be the first youth-led nonprofit and the first environmental nonprofit in Lake City, South Carolina. In a community that was once one of South Carolina’s most prosperous agricultural hubs, we are working to reignite the green spirit of sustainability. Our initiatives aim to restore Lake City's environmental vibrancy in a more impactful and inclusive way, empowering our community to reconnect with the land and embrace a greener future.

Today, the Hearth Project is working to break down barriers in the environmental movement, ensuring that our community is not only included in the conversation but are leading it.

We believe that true change begins within the community, and together, we are building a movement that will burn bright for generations to come.

The hearth is the center of a home—a place of warmth, gathering, and sustenance. It represents community, connection, and the power to ignite change. Just like a fire burning in a hearth, we want our movement to be a powerful force that sparks awareness, action, and transformation in the fight for environmental justice.
